There are three mindset types that are holding you back from achieving your goals. As we kick off the new year and start to think about all the things we want to achieve.
Our dreams feel realistic on New Years Eve, right? Whether that’s a business idea or a health journey. Maybe its a relationship goal, whatever it is, on NYE, we feel invincible.
Or so I assume because I’m always asleep before midnight on NYE.
Those dreams feel so attainable at the start of a new year but for some reason, when we get a month into the new year, we feel like a loser because we didn’t succeed or even try. Maybe you started for a few weeks but couldn’t keep up. It’s stressful, time consuming and frikken hard. So you put your goals on on the back burner (again…) for when you had “more time”.
All or Nothing mindset
The first one I want to talk about is the All or Nothing mindset. Starting January 1st, you’re going to train for a full iron man by spring. You’re going to have killer abs and crush cans with your fist because you are SO strong….but you’ve never worked out in your life. You’re going from zero to 100 in one day.
I’m not saying you can’t do an iron man competition, you sure can but let’s be realistic with the plan and timeline.
I see this all the time, especially this time of year, when people are sick of feeling tired and want to make a big change, so go big or go home, right?
WRONG – you don’t need to commit to a 75 hard challenge to have a successful new year. Or to see results.
The best plan you can make is one that you will consistently commit to and not burn you out.
I actually think there are alot of really great components to 75 hard. It’s 75 days of consistency – two 45 minute workouts, one has to be outdoors, 1 gallons of water, 10 pages of personal development, follow a diet of your choice , no alcohol or treats + take a daily progress photo.
I’ve tried this challenge multiple times but all it ever does is stress me out when I miss one of those daily tasks.
When it comes to the all or nothing mindset, we either have to go ALL IN and take massive action with a challenge like this or do nothing at all.
But what if you just picked ONE of those things and did it consistently for 75 days? Maybe that’s moving your body for 45 minutes a day? Or hitting your water goal every day? How about sitting down and working on your mind through daily personal development?
PICK one thing, be consistent and when it becomes a solid habit, we can add another goal in.
Be realistic with yourself because consistency trumps intensity every single time. You won’t be disappointed in yourself in December next year if you showed up, even for a small goal.
So forget the all or nothing mindset – be kind to your mind and avoid burnout by being realistic.
Wishful mindset
Is the wishful mindset holding you back? I’ve said it a few times on the podcast, and I’ll admit, I’ve become a victim to this too. When you said “I wish I could do that” or using your personality traits as an excuse.
I wish I had the confidence like you to show up. I wish I had your willpower when it comes to sweets. I wish I could run around the block, play with my kids, build a business – insert whatever wish you have on your heart.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m sure there are some things that we can only wish for and never have…but I always see the wishful mindset as an excuse not to try.
You’re afraid to try or maybe you’ve tried in the past and you were embarrassed when it didn’t work out. It’s easier to wish instead of try again.
And the reason I hate this mindset, is because I truly believe you could do it if you tried. It’s not going to be easy, you’re going to hit a lot of road blocks but if you put the effort into dusting yourself off when you fall, instead of wishing for the easy route, you will get there.
Your wish will come true if you frikken work for it. Stop wishing and start showing up because I KNOW you have it in you to make it happen.
Ready mindset
The last mindset I wanted to talk to you about today is the ready mindset. That’s when you are waiting til you’re ready to get started.
I’ll do it when ___ insert excuse here.
Ready is a lie. You will never be ready. Ask any mother if they were ready when they first brought their baby home from the hospital. Or business owner, were they ready when they dived into starting their small business – heck no but they started anyway.
When we finally get past the fact that we will NEVER be ready, it throws that excuse our the window. And maybe you’ll finally get started.
You don’t have to have it all figured out, just take one small step towards the big dream that you have.
So before you set those big New Years Resolutions, really think about what you want and how to get there. It doesn’t have to be a full iron man, or multi-million dollar business (although it can be), stop wishing and take one step before you’re ready. Once you get started, build on that momentum and fertilize those dreams with action. As you go, they’ll grow and before you know it, your dreams will keep growing into a life you’ve only ever imagined.
